One of the most important agricultural fairs of the time, Ripon would have been bustling with traders and farmers driving their cattle towards the Market Square, ready to barter for the best price. The streets at the time would have been much narrower - Fishergate, one of the main routes in, had not yet been widened. In front of the obelisk stands the Church Army wagon, and there would have been regular preachings competing with the traders.
