The photograph was taken in Hall's Yard, opposite the Workhouse, behind Allhallowgate. The kiln was forgotten for many years, but rediscovered during the demolition work in preparation for the erection of the flats, which in 2017 are being demolishedFragments of the clay pipes have been found in the Workhouse gardens; smoking was thought to be beneficial. The kiln had been operating until 1910 or 1912 by 'Piper' Hall.
