Hornblower - Tom Hawley

Date: c1953

Tom Hawley was Hornblower from 1916 to 1921 and 1941 to 1953. The Hornblower holds an historic position which began towards the end of the reign of Elizabeth I. His function is to set the nightly watch at the corners of the obelisk and the residence of the Lord Mayor. A plaque providing full details of the holders of the post, from the time of Benjamin Simmonds, can be seen on the north face of the obelisk.
