The photograph is taken from Somerset Row, where there was a flour and paper mill until 1896 when flooding swept away High Cleugh dam. The Drill Hall (known as Hugh Ripley Hall in 2017) was then erected on this site at the bottom of Hospital Bank. It is understood you can still gain access to the old mill race (now dry) via a man-hole cover.
