Hornblower - John Simmonds

Date: c1880

The Hornblower holds an historic position which began towards the end of the reign of Elizabeth I. His function is to set the nightly watch at the corners of the obelisk and the residence of the Lord Mayor. John Simmonds succeeded his father in this position and held office between 1846 and 1887. A plaque providing full details of the holders of the post, from the time of Benjamin Simmonds, can be seen on the north face of the obelisk.
