3 soldiers in front of bell tents, Ripon Army Camp

Date: 1915

The cap badges indicated these soldiers were part of the West Yorkshire Regiment. The West Yorkshire Regiment raised 35 Battalions, two of which - the 15th and 16th battalions - were stationed in Ripon in the early years of the First World War. The 16th Service Battalion ( 1st Bradford ) came to Ripon in January 1915, with the 15th Service Battalion ( 1st Leeds ) joining them in June 1915. Both Battalions moved from Ripon in late August 1915 for further training on Salisbury Plain before being despatched to Egypt, and from there to France in 1916.
